Bell hooks is an American scholar whose works have inspired various audiences and her sharp words strike and engrave the many topics she advocates. Hooks discusses topics on differences, hierarchy, and systems of privilege, inequalities, and oppression. She has spoken on how these topics affects cultural imperialism and racial inequality and privilege for African American communities living in a system of inequalities and privileged people. From the book “Women’s Voices, Feminist Visions: Classic and Contemporary Readings” it discusses how people are institutionalized, being placed in a structured system which is exactly what bell hooks recognizes. In college bell hooks once dropped out of a Women Studies class because she could not relate to the information that she was being taught around the female gender experience. She helped create a new meaning to the study of women.
Her ideas on feminism, education, transgression and gender exploitation has made an expanded idea on social structures set out for women and the African American experience. Bell hooks would fit right into chapter 13 and 10 of the book “Women’s Voices, Feminist Visions: Classic and Contemporary Readings”. These chapters discuss gender violence, hate crimes, activism, change, feminist education, and environmental justice to name a few. Hooks is a great example of all the topics above. Bell hooks was a radical feminist, who believed in having no gender roles which also relates to the book.
